In today's global, mobile workplace, employees need on-demand access to information – from wherever and whenever. It's increasingly important to provide users with a way to interact and collaborate across geographical borders, without sacrificing efficiency, security or performance.

HP Remote Graphics Software (HP RGS) enables remote collaboration across standard computer networks between distant users. It enables the display of 2D/3D graphics, full-motion video, and multi-display on a system without sophisticated graphics functionality, and allows multiple users to collaborate on the same design in real time.

This means that geographically disparate design teams can see and collaborate with large digital prototypes in real time. Financial trading companies can stream video, market data and applications from central services to a multi-display trading desk, remote office or disaster recovery site. Interactive digital training can be delivered simultaneously to employees at multiple global sites. And mobile professionals in all types of industries can work efficiently, anywhere they need to, through a standard LAN, WAN or VPN connection.

How it works

HP RGS allows a user to access and share the desktop of a remote computer over a standard network. All applications run natively on the remote computer and take full advantage of the compute and graphics resources of the sending system.

RGS Sender software captures the desktop of the remote system and transmits it over a standard network to a window on a local client, using advanced image compression technology specifically designed for text, digital imagery and high frame-rate video applications.

The RGS Receiver then captures keyboard and mouse input from the user and transmits it back to the sending desktop for processing. This creates a very tight display and input loop that executes up to 60 times a second over a standard network to create a high-performance interactive experience for remote users.

Next-generation features and benefits

The next generation of this software is now available. HP RGS 5.0 and 5.1 offer a variety of enhancements, from improved performance to enhanced security.

New to HP RGS version 5, the HP RGS Receiver software is now available as a free download and is supported on Microsoft® Windows® XP-based desktop PCs, mobile PCs and workstations – expanding collaborative capabilities to users who do not have the full install of HP RGS in their own environments.

HP RGS Workstation v5.1 is now available in a 60-day trial edition; visit the website to sign up. And for more general information on typical deployments, uses and benefits of HP RGS, download the white paper
