Answers

General

Q1.Where can I find detailed information on the DL320 G3 specifications and supported options?
A1.

The DL320 G3 Quickspecs include descriptions of all models of the ProLiant DL320 G3 and an extensive list of supported options from HP.

Q2.Are there any features of the DL320 G2 that are not included on the DL320 G3?
A2.

Yes. The design of the ProLiant DL320 evolves as server technologies evolve.

  • The DL320 G3 does not include standard support for parallel ATA hard drives. Technology has moved to serial ATA (SATA) hard drives. NHP SCSI drives will also be offered until serial attached SCSI (SAS) becomes standard in the market. At that time, the DL320 G3 will also incorporate SAS hard drives.
  • The DL320 G3 does not include support for RILOEII remote management cards. In an effort to help customers achieve their needs with both remote management and best use of available slots, HP's iLO technology has been included on the motherboard, omitting the need to burn a slot for management functionality.

Q3.Does the DL320 G3 have any new features that the DL320 G2 did not have?
A3.

Yes, in addition to supporting SATA and future SAS hard drives, and using iLO technology, the DL320 G3 will offer support the following:

  • PCI-express slot. This will allow faster I/O throughput and investment protection for the customer
  • Internal USB support, where customers can take advantage of the USB port on the front of the server, or insert a USB key on the connector internally
  • Faster memory and processors (see below)

Q4.Does HP offer racking solutions for my ProLiant DL320 G3 in Telco and Third Party Racks?
A4.

Yes, the DL320 G3 Quick Deploy Rail System provides Tool-free support for racks with square or round mounting holes (including Compaq/HP 7000, 9000, 10000 and HP series), with an adjustment range of 24" - 36". Installation into Telco racks requires a 3rd party option kit from Rack Solutions.

Q5.What is the ProLiant DL320 Firewall/VPN/Cache Server?
A5.

The HP ProLiant DL320 Firewall/VPN/Cache Server is an advanced, easy to use and manage firewall, VPN, and Web cache solution running Microsoft® Internet Security & Acceleration Server 2004 integrated with a hardened (secure) Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 OS and preinstalled on a ProLiant DL320 server.

Processors and memory

Q1.How do the processors on the DL320 G3 differ from the processors on the DL320 G2?
A1.

The Intel P4 processor used in the DL320 G3 includes several features new to the P4 processor. At 800 MHz, the front side bus on the Xeon used with the DL320 G3 is significantly faster than the 533 MHz front side bus rates used on the DL320 G2.

The DL320 G3 is also offering a Celeron 2.93GHz processor for those cost-conscious customers. The Celeron model has no hard drive standard, allowing the customer to choose either SCSI or SATA implementations.

Q2.What memory does the ProLiant DL320 G3 support? Is it interleaved?
A2.

The DL320 G3 supports 4GB of 400MHz dual-interleaved DDR SDRAM (PC2700). Celeron models come standard with 512MB (1×512MB) and all P4 models come standard with 1GB (2×512MB). Memory is interleaved and must be installed in pairs. Optional 512MB (1×512MB), 1GB (2×512MB) and 2GB (2×1GB) option kit will be available.

Options

Q1.What new product specific options are available for the ProLiant DL320 G3 server?
A1.

The DL320 G3 includes optional support for:

  • Floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive and DVD-ROM drive
  • PCI-express riser

Q2.How does USB compare to floppy?
A2.

USB 2.0 offers a fast interface for low speed peripheral devices - including storage devices. USB drive keys support large data capacities. Available capacities on USB disk keys can support anywhere from 16 to 300 times more capacity than a 1.44 MB floppy disk.

Q3.Can the front USB port on the DL320 G3 be used as a floppy replacement?
A3.

Utilities are now available that allow the use of USB instead of floppy for a number of tasks, including system boot from USB drive key. For additional information, view the HP Drive Key Boot Utility whitepaper.

Q4.How do I find out more about the ProLiant DL320 Firewall/VPN/Cache Server?
A4.

Visit the ProLiant DL320 Firewall/VPN/Cache Server web page.

Health and management

Q1.What server management software and features are supported on the ProLiant DL320 G3?
A1.

The ProLiant DL320 G3 offers a number of industry-leading server management software and features to help you manage your server faster and easier than ever before, which helps to lower your total cost of owning this server. Some of these include:

  • ProLiant Essentials Foundation Pack
    • SmartStart
    • HP Systems Insight Manager
    • System Management Homepage
  • ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack
  • Integrated Lights-Out

More information for all of the above can be found at HP's ProLiant Essentials website.

Q2.What is the purpose of the UID?
A2.

The Unit Identification light (UID) is a feature of all DL servers that allows the user to distinguish which server they are working on in the rack. The UID can be lit from the Insight Manager console, as well as at the server by pressing either the front or rear UID button. Once lit, the LED will be blue to help the user identify the unit.

Q3.What are the system health LEDs used for? What do the different colors mean (green, red, amber)?
A3.

The front panel and internal LEDs are used to help diagnose a server failure. When an internal component fails, the indication is made on an internal component LED (amber) and on the front panel. If the item is serviceable without removing the server hood, as in the case of a redundant power supply failure, the External Health LED will illuminate. If the item is serviceable by removing the hood, as in the case of a fan failure, the Internal Health LED will illuminate.

If no failures have occurred, the system health LEDs will be green. If a failure has occurred, but a redundant feature has enabled the system to continue running, the LED will be amber. If the failure is critical and is/has caused the system to shutdown, the LED will be red. These LEDs serve as local indicators for several failure conditions. Insight Manager will continue to report these, and many other failure conditions, as well.

Q4.What is Integrated Lights-Out (iLO)?
A4.

Integrated Lights-Out is HP's lights-out technology embedded on selected ProLiant servers. There are two versions of Integrated Lights-Out available to meet customers varying remote management needs. The iLO Standard version provides basic Lights-Out management features that are integrated as standard components of the ProLiant server. The iLO Standard features are available free of charge on supported ProLiant servers. The iLO Standard features include, simplified setup, text-based console for access to server boot sequences and text-mode operating system console, group configuration and server actions, remote power on/off, SSL security, detailed server status, logs, alert forwarding, virtual indicators, diagnostics, and automatic server recovery.

Customers can easily upgrade iLO Standard to iLO Advanced by purchasing the ProLiant Essentials iLO Advanced Pack which provides a license key for switching on the advanced functionality of iLO. The iLO Advanced feature suite include Virtual Graphical Console and Virtual Floppy Drive that provide significant cost savings by removing any advantages of being physically present in front of the server for routine access and maintenance.

For additional information visit the iLo website.
