In 2007, HP Australia hosted a visit by Stephen Crane — co-author of the seminal Trustguide, and a scientist at HP Labs in Bristol, UK. Stephen joined former Commonwealth Privacy Commissioner Malcolm Crompton in leading a series of briefings entitled: “Trust in a digital world / Enhancing privacy and security in the use of technology”.
In a digital world, finding the balance between the use of technology for enhanced service delivery and ensuring high levels of protection of personal privacy is a core concern for government and the private sector.
The issue is driven by questions of what information can be collected, how that information is stored and what are the rules governing its use.
However, global experience demonstrates that these issues can be resolved. Many governments and corporations have found the appropriate balance through the creation of trusted environments that encourage the community to engage with technology-driven services.
Stephen and Malcolm discussed global experiences in IT privacy and security and outline the response of organisations around the world. The sessions were chaired by Andrew Robson, Federal Government Manager, HP Australia. |
